If you are respectful to people, people will be respectful to you. The same is with dogs. Understand that when dogs get out of control they are not mis respecting you. They are simply out of control and our job is to help them. The better question is, how do I give respect to my dog. The answer is simple: acknowledge and treat your dog as a dog. Instead of talking to your dog, listen to your dog. Understand your relationship with your dog. Who is the parent? Who is the guardian? If your dog doesn’t feel your are making the calls don’t expect him or her to listen to you. Be aware of your state of mind and work on self control. Be aware of your dog´s state of mind. Meet your dog where she/he is at and work from there. Teach your dog with clarity. Be present. All these skills and tips are ways to give respect to your dog and a sure way to get respect back in return.

When you find yourself wishing that your dog showed you more respect, think about exactly what they’re doing, and exactly when they’re doing it. Like this: When [describe the specific context], my dog [describe what your dog does]. For example: I feel like my dog doesn’t respect me when [I call his name when he’s in the backyard] and my dog [ignores me completely]. Once you’ve identified exactly what you mean when you think your dog doesn’t respect you, you then have a clearer goal to aim for–which can make all the difference. Use the fill-in-the-blank method above to identify exactly what your goals are. Learn dog body language to more accurately identify what your dog is telling you. If you need help clearly defining your goals or figuring out how to more successfully reach your goals, that’s what we’re here for.

Introducing and enforcing rules, petting with a purpose, rewarding desired behaviors and increasing her exercise will all go a long way towards helping the dog develop self control. Another great way to help a dog develop some self control is to teach the dog to stay behind a boundary. Helping dogs learn to respect boundaries is very important with an excitable dog like Abby. I led her guardian through this exercise in the kitchen and Abby only needed one correction to get it. Developing bite inhibition and good mouth manners are a super important task for any dog guardian. I always say, its ok to do if you ask the dog to do it, if the dog does it without asking, that can be a problem.

We train them by providing motivators like food, play, praise, and petting. So, what do dogs naturally find motivating, digging, playing, napping in the sun, running outside to explore, sniffing, eating disgusting things. And if you want your dog to come, or sit, or leave it, then you have to provide them with something more motivating than what they have in front of them. Dogs are like us in this regard - they’ll stop spending their energy doing things that don’t pay off. Sure, they’ll come if you don’t have a treat - but if you never pay them, you can expect them to stop coming if there’s something more interesting to do instead. Dogs behave to create a consequence they want or to avoid one they don’t.
