You're going to need to crate train before anything else. Your day to day routine is going to change a lot because you're going to need to mentally and physically exercise your dog before you leave for work and after you get home, to ensure they are tired and content enough to rest in their down time. Will you get up an hour earlier than you already do to walk your dog, hand-feed them their breakfast and play with them? When you get home from work will you take another hour to do the same, walk them and play with them and hand-feed their dinner? An adult dog will need, at a minimum, a dog walker that will walk them for an hour at the midpoint of the day. This will break up their day so that it looks like this: 8am - Walk and mental stimulation with you, 9am-12pm - Sleep in crate, 12pm-2pm - Out with dog walker, 2pm-5pm - Walk and mental stimulation with you. It's still six hours in the crate but they'll be fulfilled and tired and they'll sleep and rest and then be ready to spend the evening with you. You're going to need to do three things to have a dog if you work full time.

If you create the right lifestyle it is possible to have a dog and work. You will need to plan for how to keep your dog happy at home while you are at work. Are there times when you could work from home or take your dog to work? Who will visit your dog at home during the day? If you can't pop in you will need to ask a friend, neighbour, or a professional dog walker to visit your dog to break up his day. Leaving your dog home alone is OK as long as it is not for too long. The maximum amount of time any dog should be left alone is around four hours. If you work full time you will need a large support network of people who can care for your pet while you're away.

Dogs are social animals and as a general rule, are happiest and most content when they are with their family groups because many of them bond strongly with their owners. Working full-time doesn’t entirely rule out getting a dog because there are things you can do to ensure they’re not left on their own for long periods of time. You could employ a dog walker or send them to doggy day care – although it’s important to make sure you can afford to do this. Perhaps you have family or friends nearby that can look after them during the day – again, it’s important to consider what you will do if their circumstances change. Many offices welcome dogs – does yours? Maybe you’ll be able to take them with you. When leaving your dog alone, you can provide them with a range of appropriate and safe enrichment for them to choose to interact with. You must still ensure that your dog is visited regularly throughout the day. Some dogs may be happy with the company of another dog which can help when it comes to you leaving the house.

One way to get around owning a dog and working all day is to take your dog to work. This, of course, isn’t always feasible, depending on what your job is, and whether your workplace is dog-friendly. If you think this might be a possibility, speak to your employer to see how this could work. If you live close enough to your workplace, you can make it a priority to get home to spend some extra time with Fido. During this break, it’s ideal if you’re able to head out on a dog walk but if you’re short on time, spend the time playing together and letting them go potty. Dog sitters and doggy daycare centers are readily available but come at a cost. It’s worthwhile researching more independent dog breeds such as the chow chow and basset hound if you know that might have to leave your dog by themselves for longer periods of time. Dogs can also be lower maintenance due to fewer exercise requirements. Keeping a dog and working can be possible with a bit of help from friends and families, dog sitters, and our leading dog products such as Omlet’s dog beds, dog crates and dog blankets.
