To manage anxiety, you need to consistently check in with yourself about what you’re worrying about, then address it. Just as we create routines with exercise for our physical bodies, we should do the same for our mental health. One way to do this is scheduling ‘thinking time’ to think through any problems or worries weighing on you instead of letting them build up. Routine also helps with stress. Create a set schedule for doing chores, work tasks, meetings, exercise, paying bills, and all the usual things you need to do. Once this becomes your normal routine, it’s easier to accomplish everything, because it becomes habit. A routine is something you know you can do well, which can be comforting during tough times. Modern life, increasingly defined by unpredictability, can be anxiety-provoking, and routines provide an anchor of predictability.

Routines can support cognitive function, boost health and provide meaningful activities and social opportunities. They can support cognitive function and may even free people up to be more creative. Research has found that having regular work processes allows workers to spend less cognitive energy on recurring tasks, which can support focus and creativity for more complex tasks. Having habits like these can set the stage for a productive work day. A review of the daily rituals of influential artists found that many artists have well defined work routines which may support their creativity rather than constrain it. Routines promote health, as regular routines can help people feel like they have control over their daily lives and that they can take positive steps in managing their health. Routines provide meaning, as evidence indicates that a health-promoting activity like walking can offer chances to enjoy nature, explore new places and socialize. Routines have the power to help us manage our health and our work, home and community lives. Regular participation in meaningful and engaging activities can also contribute positively to mental health. Routines can support older adults to function better in their home environments, and making time for exercise within routines can help meet recommended daily activity levels.

The structure and sameness of the routine I’d gotten used to was making me more creative. I feel energized and innovative at work and home. I’m thinking of inspired lessons to teach and having more fun participating in imaginative play with the girls at home. Chaotic settings do not provide much opportunity for the experience of well-being, which is engaged participation in the daily activities of a cultural community that that community deems desirable. Yes, making my daughters’ lunches each morning is boring, but it allows me to connect with my family and strengthen our bonds. The other perk of mundanity is that it lets our minds wander. When running on the treadmill, I don’t have to think about where to place my foot or how to remain upright. I’m on autopilot, so my mind can daydream and mull things over. I think of some of my best ideas during my most boring activities. Boredom provides that gap, a time when we’re not scrolling, talking, or working, it allows or perhaps forces us to find something else to do, something like musing or wondering.
