Courses typically have between 14-20 obstacles, which can include tunnels, weave poles, tire jumps, seesaws, and pause tables where the dog must stop for a set amount of time. Dog agility is a sport where you direct your dog through a pre-set obstacle course within a certain time limit. At each trial you and your dog will race around the unique courses designed for that day. All of this is done with your dog relying solely on the cues and body language you use to direct them on course. Obstacles can include tunnels, weave poles, tire jumps, seesaws, and pause tables where the dog must stop for a set amount of time.

There are many types of obstacles that make up an agility course. The A-Frame, Dog Walk, See Saw and Table are known as contact obstacles. These require the dog to come in contact with the yellow painted area of the obstacles in order to score. There are several different types of jump and hurdles found in an agility course. A typical jump is made of PVC pipes and may or may not have wings on the side. Hurdles are jumps with a solid wall as part of the jump which may be made of wood panels or blocks. A broad jump, or long jump, requires the dog to jump over a longer area with wooden slats underneath to denote the area to cover. Tunnels are set up in different configurations with the tunnel laid out completely straight or curved in forming a J or C shape. A dog must navigate through six to 12 weave poles which are 24 inches apart.

In Novice, there are 14-16 obstacles, and the course is less intensive for handler and dog. The next level, Open, increases the difficulty of the course and the number of obstacles to 16-18. The highest level, Excellent or Master, is for dogs who have successfully completed open level. This level combines tricky routes and an increase to 18-20 obstacles to challenge the dog’s stamina. The FAST events allow for creativity of the handler as there is no set course, the class has 15 obstacles with assigned point values to each. Six of the 15 must be single bar jumps, while the remaining obstacles can have a value of two to 10 points which are determined by the judge. Agility trials have six different categories in which a dog can compete, including Standard, Jumpers with Weaves, Time 2 Beat, and Fifteen And Send Time. Standard Event has a variety of obstacles that the dog must successfully conquer, including the A-frame, dog walk, and seesaw, as well as weave poles, tunnels, and a pause table. In each event, the dogs are separated into classes based on jump height, and the course includes different obstacles. The number of obstacles in each event varies, with Novice having 14-16, Open having 16-18, and Excellent or Master having 18-20.
