Dogs form a mind map of their house, they know where everything is, and where it is meant to be. Making sure your dog is on the right surface will make a big difference to their quality of life. Vinyls, laminate, wood and tiles can all be very slippery, and make your doddery dog more liable to slide or fall. Some non-slip mats and rugs across these floors can make a huge difference. A doggy with sore joints may prefer not to use stairs. Allowing lots of beds downstairs, and putting ramps in areas of the house where the use of stairs are unavoidable can allow your pooch to move around more easily.

A dog with painful, weak limbs will continue to cross a slippery floor to reach the resources that are important to them such as their food and water, or their exit point to the garden, or to simply be with their owner/friend. This does not mean that that activity is not painful or dangerous to them. Simple inexpensive modifications are hugely beneficial to assist our companions achieving a comfortable life well into old age. Through adapting your dog’s environment you will not only improve their physical comfort levels and reduce the risk of injury, you will likely slow the progression of the disease, and positively influence their emotional state through reducing stress and anxiety. The stairs to the bedroom become hard work for weak wobbly limbs leaving them liable to falling. With diseases like arthritis, that cause pain and reduced function, the dog will offload that limb and use it less. Muscle mass and function reduces, as if you don’t use it, you will lose it.

Dogs spend most of their days sleeping, particularly as they get older. Supportive bedding, such as memory foam mattresses, are ideal for dogs with arthritis. Bedding should be placed in a warm/ non-drafty area of the house. Make sure there is non-slip flooring under and around their bed. Maybe your dog sleeps on your bed, or in a crate, or on the couch, or even on the floor – no matter how many other dog bed options you have for them.

As your dog ages, the type of bed they use starts to matter even more. A supportive orthopedic bed or one made from memory foam helps to support and cushion their joints while they rest. Provide Them with Supportive Bedding. Your dog’s discomfort can increase in cold weather, so providing them a warm, comfortable sleeping area can help lessen their pain. Rugs can be helpful, but older dogs suffering from muscle weakness and decreased coordination may drag their feet and get tripped up on rugs that curl up. To reduce this risk, you can put adhesive strips under the corners of a rug to make them lie flat and use a non-slip pad underneath to help them stay in place. However, the article does not specifically mention whether dogs with arthritis should sleep on the floor.

She's usually just chilling on the floor until he tells her to go up. He says she hates dog beds, will be sad if they can't sleep together like always, but... she is so stressed/pained/tired that she's peeing herself. Am I crazy to think the kinder thing here is to have her sleep elsewhere.
