Discipline is an important part of the learning process, but the form of discipline used in positive training differs greatly from the types of discipline used in dominance training. Of course effective discipline is an integral part of positive training, but discipline is used by positive trainers and owners to guide the dog into making the right choices and eventually thinking for himself. Using constructive discipline to guide the dog into making better choices is key. Constructive disciplinary techniques such as removal, time outs, taking something of value away, ignoring behavior and interrupting negative behavior with a vocal interrupter can be used. Influencing an animal’s behavior without the use of force is also important. Anyone can get a dog to behave using punitive training but it takes a real understanding of dog psychology to use discipline effectively without inflicting pain or fear and to guide a dog into not repeating negative behavior while maintaining trust.

When a dog misbehaves, you must run out to him, drag him to the spot where he misbehaved and then punish him either with the voice or a shaking. If something does go wrong, especially at a moment when you cannot dash in to deliver chastisement, you will simply appear to ignore it, but in the privacy of the home training ground you will replicate the situation. If the dog misbehaves again, now is the time the appropriate telling-off can be done. Be aware of your dog’s personality and vary your level of discipline to suit, some dogs cower at a harsh word, others wag their tails while being held by the scruff. With a confident dog you may have to get physical occasionally, a shake of his scruff shows you are the boss. Step in straight away if the dog misbehaves, if you can’t get to him fast enough, plan for the next time things go wrong. Never kick your dog, it means you have lost control and can cause internal injuries. Do not lose your temper, you losing the plot sufficiently to kick out not only shows the dog is comprehensively on top, it also risks inflicting serious internal injuries. By far the most common physical punishment used is grabbing the scruff of the neck and delivering a good shaking.

Be Consistent With Training If you work with your puppy about not jumping on strangers on Monday but decide to let it slide the rest of the week, your dog will become confused. Being consistent with training will reinforce positive behaviors while limiting negative actions. Only Address Issues as They Happen The best way to discipline a dog is to only address issues if you catch your puppy in the act. Your dog will not understand why you feel upset if you reprimand them after the event. Be Firm, Not Aggressive A firm “no” shows your puppy that their behavior is unacceptable, but yelling or showing physical aggression may scare your dog. If they view you as a threat, your dog may be more likely to act out. Reward Good Behavior Positive reinforcement, like giving your dog a treat when they behave, is vital to help your dog understand the difference between acceptable and bad behavior. Give Timeouts You may be asking yourself, “Does timeout work for dogs?” The answer is yes! Putting your puppy in timeout is an effective way to reduce aggressive behaviors. When you place your puppy in timeout, start with a verbal signal and lead them to an isolated area for a couple of minutes.
