Dogs know when you’re leaving. It may be the tinkling of car keys, picking up a purse or a cell phone, but there is always one dead giveaway that their human is getting ready to leave the house. They think about why and where you are going, and when you will return. Dogs miss us. They know the difference between us being gone for 15 minutes to run an errand versus three hours away. For some dogs, whether it is 10 minutes or two hours that you’re gone, it’s irrelevant to them, and they think about how much they miss you. Dogs wonder why they can’t go with you. If you take your dog along on many outings, they may wonder why they are not going too.

When you leave for a vacation, your dog may not fully comprehend that you will return. They might feel confused or anxious, which can mimic feelings of abandonment. This confusion is why many pet owners worry about their dogs’ well-being during their absence. While these behaviors indicate distress, they do not necessarily mean your dog believes you have abandoned them. These reactions are simply their way of coping with an altered environment. A vacation disrupts this routine, which can create uncertainty for dogs that thrive on predictability. Planning a vacation does not equate to abandoning your dog. With adequate preparation and care, you can enjoy your time away while ensuring your furry friend feels secure and loved. By taking steps to minimize anxiety and maintain their routine, you can help your dog feel comfortable in your absence. Ultimately, the love and care you provide for your dog are paramount.

When you travel without your pup do they think they’ve been abandoned.
I noticed there was a little hint of shell shock with the last live in ward I had.
Like the first two days he was kind of a neurotic mess before he accepted the change and adapted.
My question is, did he think he was never going to see his family again and I was just gonna be his new mom.
Do you have any tips for helping them not feel abandoned at my house or is this just part of the cycle of goofy grief that dogs go through when their family is on vacation.
How much object permanence do dogs actually have.
