You will know your dog is in labour as soon as contractions begin, look out for a hardened abdomen. You might even be able to feel the contraction by placing your hands gently on their stomach. A drop in their temperature is one of the early signs of labour to pay attention to, labour usually begins around 12-24 hours after that. To know when this happens, take your dog’s temperature twice a day with a rectal thermometer throughout the final week of pregnancy. Shivering can be a sign your dog is in pain and the labour has started, this is normal but stay close by do your best to give her support by your presence and to comfort her during this time. Panting is another way a dog in labour will let you know they are in pain and the contractions have started. The start of milk production is another indication that they will get into labour soon, if their mammary glands have become firmer.

Most of the time when the last puppy is born, Mom seems to know it and then just concentrates on taking care of her babies. However, I have seen puppies stay inside and eventually that can cause serious problems. I know of only two ways to be sure that the puppies are all born. One is to take an Xray and that is the best way. The other is if the dog is not too big, I can usually feel the uterus with my hands and see if it feels like a normal empty uterus, or if there is possibly still a puppy inside. So I always recommend having Mom checked out by her veterinarian a day or two after the birth. If she is taking care of the pups, eating and drinking normally, then she has probably had all the pups.
