Neglect is where a person is causing an animal to suffer by not providing everything they need to be well. For example they’re not giving the animal the food, water or vet treatment they need. They might be keeping the animal in a small cage or leaving them alone for too long. People don’t always mean to neglect animals, they sometimes don’t understand what they need. Neglect is where a person is causing an animal to suffer by not providing everything they need to be well. A description of the animal's environment and bodily condition will help us to assess the situation and the animal's welfare.

Brushing, shampooing, washing and drying can be easy and even a little fun when done properly. The mistake almost all dog owners make at one time or another is trying to wash their dog before they remove any matted or loose hair with a brush. Shampoo is a surface-cleaning agent and will only clean the dirt it can touch. By not brushing first, you’ll never wash the dirt trapped within the matted fur. In fact, you may be tightening the hair, making it harder to remove the next time you bathe your dog. All it takes is a splash of water, a dab of shampoo and a lot of tender loving care to get your dog smelling fresh.

Not washing your dog can lead to dirt and debris accumulation in their coat, bad odors, and skin infections. Your dog’s skin is their largest organ, and washing your pet guards their skin from infections and harmful bacteria. However, it’s possible to over-wash your dog, as bathing them removes natural oils from their coat, and in excess, removing oils can cause skin irritation. If your dog looks and smells like they need a good washing, go ahead and put them in the tub. Whether it’s your dog’s coat or their activity levels, there are certain conditions that can help you set a bathing schedule that’s right for them. Bathing removes dirt and debris from their coat, facilitates the removal of dead hair and eliminates bad odors. Each canine has unique characteristics that influence when it’s appropriate to wash them.

Dogs have sensitive skin and cleaning them too often can really dry out their coat and can cause skin irritation. Unless they get dirty or roll in something a bit gross, it’s best to leave the natural oils in their coat do all the hard work – they’re pretty great at self-cleaning. If you use drop on flea and worming treatment, this will also be washed away every time you bathe them. Dogs are better left without being washed for as long as possible.

If your dog is happy and healthy then there is no reason you couldn’t just carry on as you have been. Washing your dog can flag up anomalies that you may not have noticed in the past. As a groomer, I have noticed all sorts of things on short-coated dogs that owners hadn’t noticed for themselves. It’s also really good for your dog’s skin and coat, provided good products are used. You never know – after her bath, you may realise that she was a little smellier than you first thought. Professional groomers have their hands on dogs all day, every day and anomalies in anatomy are very obvious to them and are easily flagged up, so even short-coated dogs can benefit from a professional groom. Obviously, no groomer would diagnose, but flagging up a problem has been known to save lives.
