Baths after a dog park. We just purchased an annual pass for this absolutely amazing dog park near us. My dog absolutely loves this park and loves the water. Especially as it’s getting warmer here, I know I’m going to want to take him several times a week. I’m wondering if anyone has an idea how I can clean him up after these trips. Since we went to go several times a week, I don’t think I should be bathing him that often- I live in a fairly dry climate and don’t want to cause him skin issues.

Bathing a dog too frequently can remove valuable oils from the skin and coat, causing dryness and irritation and reducing defenses against bacteria. You can learn how to wash a dog without water and how to keep your dog clean between baths. Dry shampoo doesn’t require any rinsing, will detangle your dog’s fur, and treat your dog’s skin. It’s a good idea to use waterless dog shampoo just once a week. You want to eliminate excess oils on your dog’s coat, but not all oils. Also, dry shampoos too often can cause the ingredients to build up and remain on the coat until you give your dog a bath with water. Dog Wet Wipes are an excellent way to quickly clean a messy dog. You can choose from lots of types of wipes for on-the-go cleaning. Baking soda kills bacteria, this household cleanser is a natural choice when deciding how to wash a dog without water.

You wrote that you end up bathing your dog almost every day after going to the dog park and you wonder if you are over doing it. A daily full bath is more than what most dogs need. So a bath mixed with rinsing or wiping him down is a very good plan. You can tell if his skin is getting too dry if you see seborrhea or dry skin flakes. If his skin looks healthy – you are probably doing just fine and not over-doing it. When you do bathe him – make sure you use a dog shampoo. The pH of their skin/hair is different and those formulated for dogs are less drying to them.

Rinse Off the Excess Mud: Upon returning home, give your dog a thorough but gentle rinse. Use lukewarm water in a shallow bowl or small bucket to either immerse one or both paws at a time. Start from their paws and work your way up to the legs ensuring to rinse away as much mud as possible without causing discomfort. If your dog is so muddy that a bath is required then please ensure you use dog appropriate shampoo and rinse your dog thoroughly after shampooing to remove all traces of soap. Leftover shampoo residue can lead to skin irritation. Towel dry your furry friend gently, absorbing as much moisture as possible.
