There is no universal recommendation for how often to bathe a dog. Medium to longhaired dogs usually require more frequent bathing, consider bathing them every couple months. Shorthaired breeds may only need to be bathed every one to three months. Dogs with soft coats and oily coats may need to be washed more frequently. Breeds with thick fur such as the Bernese Mountain Dog need fewer baths because they shed regularly. Very active dogs need baths more frequently than sedentary canines, if your pet is always active, wash them more often, if needed.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit my dog hasn’t been given a bath since late August. She’s 11 lbs and not smelly, not itchy, not flaky, etc. Her fur is still very soft. I plan on giving her one this weekend before we leave for vacation next week. Her lack of baths does not mean I’ve been slacking on other aspects of her care. She gets her nails trimmed regularly, her ears get cleaned every couple weeks, and her teeth get brushed regularly too. It’s JUST baths that she hasn’t gotten in a couple months.

The happy medium may range from bathing your dog once a week to only a few times a year. Bathing too frequently can lead to dry coats and skin problems, while not enough bathing can lead to health problems and a stinky pup. The time of year will also affect how often to bathe and what products to use. During the warm, wet months of the year, many dogs are prone to greasy coats and doggy odor. Dogs that swim in the warmer months may not need as many baths but will need a good rise in clean water post swim. During the winter, dogs typically aren’t as dirty, but are more prone to dry skin which can be itchy and irritating, so a moisturizing shampoo is necessary. The level of bathing will depend on the amount of dirt and grime on your pooch. Puppies and young adults tend to be experts when it comes to finding ways to get dirty, as a result, these dogs often need more baths. Senior pups typically do not need as much bathing—usually just enough to keep any body odor at bay.

For dogs with medium-to-large coats, a bath could be needed from weekly to every four to six weeks, as long as the coat is properly maintained in-between baths. Hairless breeds, such as the Chinese Crested and the Xoloitzcuintli, are actually quite care-intensive, and these breeds require weekly baths. The Puli doesn’t develop that typical doggie odor, and really, a Puli probably doesn’t require as many baths as most other breeds. Thick or double coats on breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Siberian Huskies, etc., naturally insulate the dogs seasonally. Overbathing could strip too much oil from the skin and disrupt this process. We should wash our dogs when they are no longer huggable. You can get away with giving short-haired dogs a good rubdown with a damp washcloth to remove the dirt that was picked up during a busy visit to the dog park.

Dogs are better left without being washed for as long as possible. Dogs have sensitive skin and cleaning them too often can really dry out their coat and can cause skin irritation. Unless they get dirty or roll in something a bit gross, it’s best to leave the natural oils in their coat do all the hard work – they’re pretty great at self-cleaning. If you use drop on flea and worming treatment, this will also be washed away every time you bathe them.

How often you bath a dog should be based on need. Some dogs never seem to need bathing, whereas others get itchy or smelly quickly. An average dog is best bathed once every two weeks. Is It Bad To Bath Your Dog Every Week, frequent bathing can be harmful to some dogs, especially those with more wolf-like coats. However, using a good shampoo should allow you to bathe as often as you like. If you bath correctly, it should result in a softer, shinier and less itchy skin and coat. I have a dog, Ruby, that I bathed up to twice a week when she got itchy. In my case, with my three dogs, for the past 20 years, my house has been itchy-dog boot camp, and I first noticed how well bathing can work on the itch level.
