Maybe walking alone is the sacrifice one must make to see life in a different light from everyone else. To focus on our thoughts, we seek solitude. People like me crave to be alone when surrounded by others and savour moments of solitude whenever they come. Sometimes, walking the lonely path simply means daring to have original thoughts and staying off society’s well-trodden bandwagon. It means developing a different philosophy about life from what others consider acceptable. Humans are tribal creatures, we find comfort in belonging to a group and in conforming to shared norms, but true originality comes from stepping away from the pack. The voices in our heads are already loud enough, and adding the noise of those around us makes clear thinking impossible.

I want to get out and about, but I feel like walking alone is weird. I feel weird to me, and I'm afraid people will judge me and I'll feel anxious. On a trail, meant for walking/biking, is it weird to go alone, just with your iPod - without a dog.

Solo walking is great because it can help us step outside our comfort zone, which in my experience, creates a ripple effect in other areas of life. It can help us let go of our fears and be bolder. Walking helps us know ourselves better: we find our own pace, focus on our feelings, and make better decisions in our lives. I never go anywhere on my own, solo walking is definitely out of my comfort zone. The thought of walking a specific trail or going to a place I don’t know on my own fills my stomach with butterflies. What would happen if I got lost or needed help, would I look like a lonely person. I wanted to make myself do something that’s hard for me, to challenge myself and grow. When I’d finished, I did wonder why I hadn’t done it sooner, as it hadn’t been a problem walking on my own at all. I felt I’d accomplished something, I’d been brave and got over my fears.

For such a busy place, walking alone gave me a sense of solitude. When you walk alone, you have so many choices like how fast you move, where you go and what kind of experience you want to have. You don’t have to talk. You can wear headphones and tune out the world if you chose. Walking solo offers spontaneity. You can grab a coffee, watch a street performer, chat with a stranger, or deviate through a neighborhood or park just because. You can go into a thrift shop or a pet store and snuggle with puppies as long as you’d like and not worry about wasting someone else’s time.

When you are on a long walk by yourself, there is plenty of time for self-reflection. The solitude and uninterrupted space primes you to be open to insights, set goals, and create some distance between yourself and a problem to find a new perspective. It provides a much-needed break from the demands of work, relationships, and responsibilities. You don’t need to plan a walk around anyone else’s schedule, pace or destination. Why wait? Why compromise? Just go! Accomplishing a long-distance walk solo is an incredibly empowering experience and earns you a well-deserved sense of achievement. It doesn’t matter if it is a famously long trek, or the farthest you’ve ever gone - getting out there is worthy of a pat on the back!
