Do not allow your dog to lick or scratch at the incision, as he may pull the sutures out and could introduce an infection into the incision. If your dog persists in licking or chewing at the incision, he may need to wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent this behavior. Depending on the location, a surgical recovery garment that covers the incision may be worn as an alternative. Restrict your dog's activity for 7-14 days to allow the incision to begin healing. If your dog's incision has non-dissolving sutures, staples, or stent sutures, they are usually removed 10-14 days after surgery.
The general instructions for incision care are the same for all surgical incisions.
When you do take your dog outdoors, keep him on a short leash and keep walks brief.
Do not allow your dog to jump, play with other dogs, or engage in any strenuous activity that could cause excessive stretching of the surgical incision, especially during the first few days.

Do not allow your animal to lick the incision area. If your pet licks the incision site you need to get an Elizabethan Collar from your veterinarian to prevent problems. Follow These Rules for 10 Days After Surgery. Your animal should be kept as quiet as possible. Your animal should be kept in a clean indoor environment. Check the incision daily for excessive swelling, redness, oozing, or separation. Some swelling is expected.

He's looked so sad with it on so I was celebrating with him while it came off. It's 10 days after my pup's neuter and the clinic said that I could take his cone off by now. He's managed to lick the wound pink - not raw or bleeding, but definitely pink and not the dried white sutures as before.

DO NOT let your animal lick the incision area. If this occurs, you will need to buy an Elizabethan collar (plastic lampshade collar) either here, at your vet or at a pet supply store. If this instruction is not followed, the incision can be licked open and will become infected. This is considered self-trauma and the Dakin Community Spay/Neuter Clinic will NOT cover your costs if it leads to a trip to a veterinary hospital. No running, jumping, playing, rough housing, or strenuous activity for 7 to 10 days following surgery. We recommend that your animal receive a post-operative examination with your regular veterinarian 7-10 days after surgery. Please have the incision checked for complete healing and discuss additional needs, follow-up care, and booster vaccines. Keep your pet confined to a warm, quiet environment and separate from other pets and young children for the first 12 hours. Keep your pet dry for 7 to 10 days following surgery. The top layer of the surgical incision is closed with surgical glue and will come open if the area gets wet.

These cone collars are the most effective protection against your pet causing trauma to their incision, and should be worn for 10-14 days following surgery. The cone should go past your pet’s nose by two inches. If it's any shorter, they're likely still able to reach their incision. They're only effective if fitted properly.
