Dogs can wear harnesses, in fact, harnesses are a useful way to reduce the risk of neck injury, maximizing comfort and making walkies more enjoyable. You should be able to fit a finger comfortably between the strapping and their body while they’re wearing it so it doesn’t move position while the dog’s moving. Your dog shouldn’t be able to slip out of it. Some harnesses cross directly in front of the shoulders preventing natural movement, and you should avoid these. Choosing a harness that allows for natural movement is important so your dog’s movement is not restricted. Make sure your dog’s harness fits well.

Note that there are some dogs out there who are so sensitive to wearing equipment that they will shut down completely when you put a harness on them. This can sometimes be modified with proper conditioning to the equipment, but if it cannot then this is one instance where using a flat collar is appropriate. If the straps sit on or too close to the dog's shoulders it can impede movement which at best will be uncomfortable for your dog and at worst could cause future injury and keep young dogs from developing properly. When I am looking for a harness for a dog the most important thing after correct sizing that I look for is that the straps of the harness sit far away from the dog's joints. The Petsafe Easy walk harness sits right on the dog's shoulder blades and can rub them while they are walking. The Sense-ation harness sits across the dog's shoulder blades which can impede movement. The Julius K9 harness sits right across the dog's shoulders.

are harnesses bad for dogs? my breeder is pretty adamantly against harnesses in general…says they negatively affect the dog’s gait and can cause issues. I couldnt really find any conclusive research on this.

Nothing beats loose lead walking for reducing pressure from a collar, but we all know that not all dogs are perfect when they first start learning. To avoid painful eye problems: 1. Brush up on your loose lead walking and 2: switch from a collar to a well-fitting harness. The collar rests on the area of the neck where pressure is applied to the lymph nodes, mandibular and thyroid gland as they are pushed against the trachea and oesophagus. Trauma can occur whenever the dog or owner pulls on the leash. When a dog’s collar is too tight or jerked.. The pressure could damage the windpipe, the thyroid gland and the immune system enough to pose a very big risk to the dog’s health. It only takes one jerk to start causing damage.
