Spartan leads the world in number of events by far, hosting races in 30 countries. Since the beginning, they’ve had some basic race formats: Sprint (5K, with about 20 obstacles—now they have an urban and stadium option), Super (10K, with about 25 obstacles), and Beast (about 13 miles, with about 30 obstacles). Their Ultra is a 50K with a crazy 60 obstacles. Muddy Princess is designed as a fun 5K for women only. With 18 to 20 obstacles in the race, you will have your share of work cut out for you. BoneFrog also offers unique distance varieties on the same day, including three-mile, six-mile, and nine-mile options, as well as an endurance option, which just means as many laps as possible. Courses were 10 to 12 muddy miles long. There’s now the Tough Mudder 15K which is just over 9 miles and the Tough Mudder 5K.

The obstacle course lasts a little over an hour and consists of thirteen obstacles built by each squadron located around the RMC grounds. The test consists of 11 obstacles that must be navigated sequentially and is a vigorous test of total body fitness and high intensity cardio-vascular capacity. Inflatable obstacle courses can have participants go through a variety of areas like the Bish Bash, a tall loose structure to push or wade through, nets to crawl under, walls to climb over and holes to jump through. Some larger inflatables have even more areas. Typical courses involve obstacles the participants must climb over, crawl under, balance, hang, jump, etc. An assault obstacle course can be done inside or outside. Obstacles such as a 12-foot wall and truck pulling are designed to test teamwork and physical fitness of First Years. The First Year flights are judged on the time it takes to complete each obstacle.
