On average, a good rule of thumb is about a 20-minute walk a day for most dogs. Nonetheless, this can vary. On average, most dogs need at least 20 minutes of robust exercise a day. If possible, try to take them on a 20-minute walk, run or hike. However, as a rule, 20 minutes per day is a good estimate for most dogs. For older dogs, it might be beneficial to split the walk or exercise into multiple sessions. Senior dogs generally need the same amount of exercise, but it can be broken up into two sessions of 10 minutes each.

A 20 minute walk is sufficient for some breeds, such as small breeds, like the Chihuahua to the Bichon or Shih Tzu, and brachycephalic dogs – those with a squashed face like Bulldogs and Pugs. They require a 20-to-30 minute walk a day. However, this may not be enough for other breeds, as a general rule-of-thumb is that your dog should spend between 30 minutes and two hours being active every day. The exception would be the toy and miniature poodle which are more active and also intelligent, so require a little more physical activity and plenty of mental stimulation. A general guide for exercise per breed size is also available to help determine the right amount of exercise for your dog. Every dog, just like every person, is unique, but what breed, age, size and overall health can tell you a lot. If you’re just starting a walking routine with your dog, start slowly, observe their responses, and add longer walks as they get stronger.

Puppies need less ‘formal’ exercise than fully grown dogs. Taking them for long walks while they’re young can overtire them. You’ll know your dog best, and the amount of exercise a dog can manage will vary between breeds and dogs, but a good rule of thumb is a ratio of five minutes of formal exercise per month of age (up to twice a day) until the puppy is fully grown i.e., 15 minutes (up to twice a day) when three months old, 20 minutes when four months old and so on. As they become older, they’ll be able to cope with larger amounts of exercise. Puppies and dogs can become frustrated and bored if they don’t get enough exercise, so it’s important that they go out for exercise every day. Time and play spent in your garden should be encouraged, but it’s no substitute for going out for a walk and exploring new environments or socialising with other dogs.

Most dogs can tolerate a daily 20–30-minute walk if they have a good body condition. Most dogs can tolerate a daily 20–30-minute walk if they have a relatively good body condition. Take your dog for a walk and monitor her energy level. If she starts to slow down about 25–30 minutes into the walk, she may be getting tired. Instead of eagerly striding forward, she may start to pant more and take more interest in her surroundings. Dogs in great physical health can tolerate walks for up to two hours or go hiking for hours at a time. But it may be difficult for overweight or obese dogs to walk 10 minutes without taking multiple breaks or panting heavily due to exertion. If you provide both physical and mental outlets for your pup, she will overall be healthier and mentally more well-balanced. Try to have your dog engage in at least 10–15 minutes of continuous activity every day.

Most dogs in good physical condition can tolerate daily walks between 20-30 minutes. Dogs that are very healthy and fit might enjoy going on hikes for up to a few hours! If you notice that they’re becoming exhausted on longer walks, try going for short dog walks and gradually increasing the duration. If all you have time for some days is a 5-minute walk around the block, do that! There will be other days when you have more time for adventurous trail walks. Consider your own schedule and maybe think about hiring a dog walker if necessary.
