So how do you satisfy your dog’s high-energy, inner instincts? AKC Lure Coursing may be the perfect answer! It’s an exciting way for him to do what comes naturally, but in a safe, controlled environment. In this event, dogs chase a mechanized, white plastic lure around a 600+ yard course that simulates the unpredictability of chasing live prey. Zig-zagging across a big, open field is simply heaven for these dogs! At the same time, it helps improve their focus, agility and sportsmanship. Until you’ve actually seen it in action, it’s hard to imagine the complete and utter joy on your dog’s face as he runs the course, following the lure from start to finish. They’re born and bred to chase their prey! Their natural inclination to hunt by sight, not smell, is literally in their DNA. He’s going after his “prey” of course, and he’s doing exactly what sighthounds are supposed to do.

Lure Coursing is the pursuit of a ‘Lure’ (usually made from plastic bags) by one or two dogs. The lure is then pulled around a series of turns by a motorised Lure Machine specially designed for the job. This is controlled by a Lure Driver who is trained to keep the Lure in front of the dogs when running. The dogs complete the course and depending upon which UK Lure Coursing Club you attend, they are either scored on a points-based system or Coursing rules. Lure Coursing does not involve live game but challenges the natural instinct of the Whippet to chase by offering a visual stimulant in the form of a Lure. The Lure Coursing season in the UK runs from March until October. Coursing is great fun and a good day out for Whippet and Owner and a great way to keep your dog fit.

Very simply put, it’s the game that utilizes the strongest sighthound instincts - chasing their prey. In Lure coursing the main object is a ‘prey’ which is usually made from a white plastic ribbon. It is well attached to a cord which is mechanically moved by an operator across the field based on the course layout. Sudden turns simulate the real chase. At the end of a course the lure stops and the dog finally catches it. Lure Coursing is the best possible way to simulate a real chase, let their instincts flourish in a safe and harmless way and allow them to run as fast as they can. Let’s be honest, Sighthounds are the chasers. Even if that’s a teeeeny tiiiiny italian greyhound. Or, at least, most of them have this instinct in their blood. Does your dog become a crazy and incessant hunter once he sees a bird or a squirrel, what about a flying plastic bag, is he good at chasing things.
