Food scents top the list of canine attractants. Whether it's the sizzling aroma of cooked meat, the sweetness of fruits, or the earthy scent of vegetables, dogs are naturally drawn to food odors.
Certain plant-based aromas have a unique appeal to dogs: Lavender: Known for its calming properties, lavender can soothe and attract dogs, making it a popular choice for relaxation products.
Blueberry and Blackberry: These fruity scents are not only enticing but also indicate the presence of tasty treats.
Mint: Fresh and invigorating, mint can pique a dog's curiosity and may even have digestive benefits.
Rose: The subtle sweetness of rose can be appealing, adding a touch of floral intrigue to a dog's scent palette.
Just like humans, dogs have individual scent preferences influenced by their experiences, breed, and personality.
While many dogs may be attracted to the scents mentioned above, others might show interest in different aromas.
Observing your dog's reactions can provide insights into their unique likes and dislikes.

My 1.5 yr old dog has a sharp nose and follows a scent like no other. I think it may be based on his various breeds. He’s a very active sniffer and a very playful dog. I want to find more activities for him that will activate his scent recognition. I’ve also heard that sniff mats can be a great anti-stress and time consuming activity for dogs.

Many owners simply start with the dogs own food or some tasty treats to really get that sniffer working. The safest thing to begin using is dog food or tasty dog treats. This simply gets the dog practicing scenting and searching with their nose and it is something you have readily available at home. This can also be done using the scent of their favourite toy. When you are ready to progress, you can consider using a more specific scent that your dog will not commonly find in the home. You want to use a scent that is unique to your scentwork training and will be a scent your dog identifies to find. Below is a list of scents you can use: Frankinsense oil, Ginger oil, Lavender oil, Myrrh oil, Vanilla oil, Vetiver oil, Camomile oil, Clary sage, Cedarwood, Truffle oil, Napier gun oil. Always make sure your dog is not repulsed by the scent, do a small trial by placing a drop onto a cotton pad within a sealed container with holes in the top.

The sense of smell in dogs is legendary.
Some research shows that they can even detect the difference in identical twins.
More remarkable is the growing body of evidence that canines can identify certain cancers in humans.
With this kind of smelling power, it should come as no surprise that dogs can have a preference for scents that go beyond steak and chicken.
The 8 Smells That Dogs Love include vanilla, coconut, lavender, dead things, rabbits, each other, ginger, and you.
Your dog may not know why they like vanilla, but a study published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science found that it had a calming effect on rescue dogs in shelter situations.
The same study found a similar effect with coconut.
Another study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science showed that dogs were more likely to interact with toys scented with the soothing scent of lavender.
Ginger has calming effects on humans, and it can have similar health benefits for canines, easing stress and helping your pet relax in stressful situations.
Researchers found that detecting the scent of a familiar human showed a heightened response in the caudate nucleus, the part of the brain associated with positive experiences.
