Every little one is different but when can I hope to expect to sleep more than an hour at a time. I'm exclusively breastfeeding, and my son is 4 weeks and a few days old. Sometimes he'll eat for 20 minutes, sometimes 45. He very rarely hits that three hour mark. More often, he'll eat and then wake at 1 hour and 40 minutes after the eating start time.

Newborns may nurse for up to 20 minutes or longer on one or both breasts. How long it takes to breastfeed depends on you, your baby, and other things, such as whether your milk supply has come in, your let-down reflex happens right away or after a few minutes into a feeding, your milk flow is slow or fast, the baby has a good latch, taking in as much as possible of your areola, your baby begins gulping right away or takes it slow, your baby is sleepy or distracted. As babies get older and more skilled at breastfeeding, they may take about 5–10 minutes on each side. Newborn babies should breastfeed 8–12 times per day for about the first month. By the time your baby is 1–2 months old, he or she probably will nurse 7–9 times a day. In the first few weeks of life, breastfeeding should be on demand, which is about every 1-1/2 to 3 hours. Some might feed every 90 minutes, whereas others might go 2–3 hours between feedings.

Most babies gradually settle into a feeding routine, they vary in how often they want to feed. Babies tend to feed little and often, so they may not finish their bottle. Although most babies gradually settle into a feeding routine, they vary in how often they want to feed. Unused infant formula that has been kept at room temperature must be thrown away within 2 hours. A big feed does not mean that your baby will go longer between feeds. Your baby is likely to need night feeds for at least the first few months of their life. You can expect night feeds to reduce as your baby gets older. Babies usually take small amounts of milk and stop for a rest, and then take more.

Breastfed babies will feed every 2 - 3 hrs initially, and usually a feed will last about 20-30 minutes. Your baby may breast feed every two to three hours on request. This may be 8 - 12 times a day. Each feeding may last - 30 minutes where you will breast feed 10 -15 minutes on each breast. Babies fed infant formulas usually will feed every 3 - 4 hours during the day. Most babies will take 1 - 2 ounces of formula per feeding and will eat every three to four hours for the first 1-2 weeks. Give your baby about 20 minutes to eat. By the end of the first month they eat about 4 oz at a time. By 2 months, increase to 6 oz per feed, and by 4 months, about 6-8 oz per feed. Babies will feed every 3-4 hours at night time. During the first 2 weeks, babies will eat on average 1 - 2 oz at a time.
