Feeding your baby closer together is one of the most important ingredients in consistent nighttime sleep. I believe feeding your baby closer together will get you more total milk for the day, even if your baby eats slightly less per feed. Feeding further apart can mean 1 less feed per day, this will likely mean less total food for the day, even if baby eats slightly more, further apart. Feeding your baby closer together is typically the best choice for sleep, as it almost always ensures 1 extra full feeding per day, which means naturally stopping night feeds sooner. Once they are sleeping through the night, you can work to lengthen time between feedings, but just not at the expense of your consistent nighttime sleep.

For the first few months of your baby’s life, they will likely eat every 3 hours and take a nap every 1-1.5 hours, which is known as the “3 hour schedule”. However, as your baby gets older, they will start to stay awake longer between naps, as well as go longer between feedings - about 4 hours. In my courses, I suggest moving to a 4 hour schedule around 12 weeks, but I also let you know that there is no rush and it’s important to wait until your baby is ready before switching to a longer schedule. Baby’s age is one thing to look for, making sure baby is at least 12 weeks old and growing properly. Hunger cues are also important, as your baby turning away from feedings at the 3 hour mark now can indicate they are ready. Additionally, sleepy cues, such as your baby taking a long time to fall asleep for naps after 1-1.5 hours, could be a sign they are ready to stay awake closer to 2 hours. Once your baby shows these signs, you can slowly and gently start making the transition to a 4 hour schedule.

You do not need a feeding schedule. Health professionals recommend following your baby's cues and feeding them when they are hungry. Babies tend to feed little and often, so they may not finish their bottle. Although most babies gradually settle into a feeding routine, they vary in how often they want to feed. Your baby is likely to need night feeds for at least the first few months of their life. You can expect night feeds to reduce as your baby gets older.
