You should put sunscreen on your dog if they have light-coloured fur or any thin fur patches, as these areas are prone to sunburn. It’s essential to protect them from the sun with pet-safe sunblock, especially on areas such as their ears, nose, eyelids, and belly. If your dog has white or light skin patches that are exposed, you can use sun cream to protect them from the sun. Use a pet-safe, long-lasting sun cream that is at least factor 30. Apply a thin layer to cover the white and light patches of skin that are exposed on your dog. You should also apply sun cream to your dog before they go outside, and reapply regularly, especially if they are going to be in the sun for an extended period. You can even get pet sunblock with a bitter taste to prevent your dog from licking it off.

If a dog has to be outdoors during peak sun exposure hours, sunscreen should be reapplied to sun-sensitive areas of the body—the nose, around the lips, tips of the ears, the groin, and the belly—throughout the day. If the dog has gone swimming, the sunscreen should be immediately reapplied. In addition to providing your dog with access to shade and hydration during the summer months, sunscreen should be part of your warm-weather care routine. You should put sunscreen on your dog, especially those with light skin and white fur or hair. Keeping a dog indoors from 10 am to 4 pm is the best way to protect from the sun’s harmful rays.

Slap on the doggy sunscreen Sunscreen protects dogs from sunburn, just as it protects us, but human sunscreens aren’t generally safe for dogs. Apply a pet-safe sun cream (ideally at least SPF 15) to any areas that are lacking in pigment or more exposed. These include your dog’s ears, nose, belly and thighs. Dogs with lighter coloured fur, a thin coat or no fur are more prone to sunburn as harmful rays will more easily get through to their skin. This also applies to dogs that have been shaved. The delicate skin around our dogs’ ears and nose is especially susceptible to sunburn – and therefore skin cancer – we need to take extra care to protect those sensitive areas. It might sound obvious, but for pets that are prone to burning, it’s best to keep them out of the sun altogether where possible – especially from 11am-3pm.

If you find yourself putting on sunscreen before a dog walk, it makes sense to put some on your dog too. Your dog’s nose, ears and belly are the most exposed areas on your dog, where the hair is finer and shorter, so these are the key places to apply sunscreen. The sunlight can be reflected from the ground, so even though your pup’s belly isn’t going to be in direct sunlight on a walk, they could easily be burned from the reflection, and the closer their tummy is to the ground, the more likely they can be burned this way. You should use pet-safe sunscreen because human sunscreen can have toxins which could harm your pet. Avoid taking them out in the sun during the hottest part of the day.
