The clicker is a teaching tool. Remember the clicker is not a remote, so don’t point it at the dog and click. If you have a sensitive dog, the dog is likely to run and hide if you do that. If your dog appears fearful of the clicker sound, you can either muffle the sound in your pocket, or they also sell a clicker that does produce a softer sound. If your dog is still fearful of the clicker, we then will need to come up with another marker, such as a word or sound. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS pair the clicker with food. The clicker signifies two things to a dog, this is the behavior I want, and here is your reward for that behavior. The clicker is not used as a tool to call your dog from the back yard. Once your dog has learned the behavior you are after, you will then transition to a verbal marker and change your reinforcement schedule.

Clicker training is a really great way of teaching your pet new things in a positive way and making learning fun for both of you. Clicker training is a positive training method based on rewarding an animal for good behaviour. A clicker gives a quick, clear and consistent signal to your pet. When animals are rewarded for the right behaviour, they’re more likely to repeat it and look for ways that they can offer that behaviour so they get a treat, making training more of a game than a chore for them – and you. The click must be an absolute guarantee that your pet will immediately get a reward.

I've had my pup since he was 7 weeks old, tomorrow he turns 12 weeks. Two days ago I got a clicker and today was the first day I've been able to work with him while using it. He went from requiring a lure for everything from sitting, shaking, doing down, 'look at me' go to bed just using verbal commands in one 20 minute ish training session. I am absolutely blown away by how effective and simple this form of training is and I feel like I've switched from bribing my dog into doing things to rewarding him for his obedience. This is awesome. I feel like I'm communicating one on one with my dog having a conversation.

Clicker training your dog can be a really good way to get them to focus on what you’re asking them to do. You can use a clicker during training to help your dog recognise when they’ve carried out a behaviour that will lead to a reward. Using a clicker can be more predictable for your dog, and they will likely more strongly associate the sound with getting a treat. Our voices also naturally vary in tone, pitch and volume depending on lots of different things, but the clicker sound is consistent, and your dog will easily recognise it. If your dog is noise sensitive and the clicker sound is worrying them, you can muffle the sound by clicking the clicker from inside your pocket. If they are still scared of the sound you should use a marker word instead.
