If your puppy keeps peeing in the house, do not punish her. Swatting dogs with a newspaper and rubbing their nose in their urine are outdated training methods. If these negative training techniques are used, your dog will associate you with the punishment and can become afraid of you. Instead, use positive reinforcement with praise and treats when your puppy holds her bladder and successfully urinates outside. Never Punish Her While you should never punish your puppy for peeing in the house, it’s especially important that you don’t punish her for an accident that happened while you were out. Dogs only have three to five seconds to make an association between an action and a reward or punishment. If you punish her for having an accident while you’re gone, she’ll understand she’s being punished but she won’t know why.

The accidents we have had have been my fault, a product of my learning curve, so I haven't been punishing her. I feel like this time I was doing everything right and she still peed inside, my first reaction was my stepdad's reaction whenever the family dog peed inside; you put their nose on the puddle and you spank the dog. I feel like I fucked up, I know I shouldn't have done that.

Don't punish or scold them for submissive urination. Never punish your dog after they’ve marked. Punishment administered after the event is ineffective because they won't associate the punishment with something they may have done hours ago, leading to confusion and possibly fear. Again, punishment is not an effective method. Keep greetings low key. If your dog is excited, wait a few minutes for the dog to calm down before acknowledging him. This should help curb his unabashed enthusiasm and involuntary peeing. When they begin to urinate, interrupt them with a loud noise and take them outside. If they urinate outside, praise them and give them a treat.
