What are the first things you should teach a new puppy. Been considering getting a new puppy and was wondering the proper steps in training them. Tab289's and Kikopup's videos are great, but I am not sure in what order to teach the puppy these things. Also should training start right away or should I give the puppy a day to get used to its new surroundings. Make sure you check out our WIKI for recommended resources and articles about common problems.

Teaching your dog basic obedience - such as sit, wait and coming back when called - gives them the freedom to do the things they like to do, like running off lead and coming with you to meet friends and family, while being safe and under control. All training should be reward based. Giving your dog something they really like - such as food, toys or praise - when they show a particular behaviour means that they're more likely to do it again. Minimise distractions - always start lessons for new tricks in a quiet room in your house away from any distractions. Break training up into short but regular sessions so your dog isn't overwhelmed. Be patient - just like us, dogs all learn at different rates so don't worry if your dog doesn't pick things up straight away. Always end with something your dog knows, so the session finishes positively. Have fun - training is a great way for you to bond with your dog.

Teaching your puppy to sit is probably one of the first things owners teach their pup to do after toilet training. Firstly, take a treat or toy to get your dog’s attention and hold it in front of their nose. Gently take the treat from in front of your dog’s nose to behind their head, taking the treat over the top of their head. This should get your dog to sit. Don’t push their bottom down but you can gently place your hand on their back and say ‘sit’ as they move into a sitting position – just try again if they don’t get it first time. As soon as their bottom hits the floor, make sure you praise your puppy and give them their reward straight away. That way they will associate the reward with sitting. Teaching your dog or puppy to do anything, you should always use positive, reward-based training. Dogs respond far better to positive training and are more likely to pick up what you are trying to teach them faster. Consistency is key with puppies.
