Is it okay to take a puppy to a dog park?

We have a great dog park near us. Our VERY energetic, 4 mo old pup could really benefit from running off leash at the dog park. She could really use some off-leash running at the dog park, but then there is no way to stop her eating anything and everything. She wants to eat every leaf, stick or clump of dirt in sight. We are constantly trying to stop her from grabbing every leaf on the ground and biting the grass and dirt because now we are so paranoid about her picking up something. Are we being too paranoid about taking the "leaf vac" to the dog park.
