To remove the water for an 8 hour period is not harmful -- unless 1) the ambient temperature is very warm or 2) active dog that has been excersizing or working during the day. A small amount should be given before the night. Thinking about this though -- an adult of 2 years should be able to hold his bladder overnight without a problem if trained to do so. If there is no water overnight - the first morning urine will be concentrated -- specific gravity on a urinalysis will show this. However, unless dehydrated, the urine will dilute throughout the day when water is consumed if the kidneys are normal.

Many dog owners leave water out for their dogs all the time thinking their dogs will drink as much, or as little, as they need. But do you know how much they are actually consuming? Most animals have an instinctual drive to consume enough water to meet their daily requirements, but it is important to regulate your dog’s water intake. You can still leave water out in a bowl for your dog but you need to ration it during the day. Maybe only fill the bowl half or a quarter of the way each time. This means increased refills throughout the day so they have steady access to water, but a reduced amount. Over or under drinking can cause health problems.

Ideally, after every use. It is recommended that bowls are washed and cleaned immediately after your pet has finished eating to avoid bacteria growth. If your pet’s bowls are left outside, they should be cleaned twice a day, due to the increased risk of contamination from insects and plant debris. Studies have shown that pet bowls are the third most contaminated item in the household and are a breeding ground for bacteria and germs, such as Salmonella and E. coli that can make you and your pets ill. Would you eat from a bowl or drink from a glass that hadn’t been washed in several days? Many of us are likely to sit our pet’s water and food bowls outside in the summer months for them to enjoy their dinner or a cool drink in the good weather. But did you know that our pet’s bowls need to be cleaned just as regularly as the dishes we eat and drink from especially if they are left outside?
