Safe is my number one concern. Is it sanded smooth? Does it have sharp, pointy edges? Choking hazards? Age Appropriate is also important, so I consider if this toy is even remotely close to the ages and stages of my kids. A good toy should be Open-Ended, meaning it encourages Creativity, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Exploration, and Imagination. I also look for toys that Engage vs Entertain, so it encourages play rather than just watching. Additionally, a good toy should have a good Shelf Life, meaning it will grow with my child and can be used for more than its original intent. It's also crucial that the toy is Durable & Sturdy, as it should be able to take a beating. While not all toys need to be labeled educational, it's a plus if they integrate learning in a way that doesn't have to scream ABC's and 123's.
