What makes a park feel safe?

A good public place is one where everyone feels like they have their own space to be, to engage with and to enjoy. A lively park is always a safe place to be. If we design a place for everyone to use, then everyone will use it. More people, more activity, more safety! A street should have designated space for people and vendors and shops as they contribute to the concept of “eyes on the street”. It also includes clean public toilets which determine how long people can stay out in a public place. Good Infrastructure A public place needs to have good amenities and infrastructure so that the people using them are comfortable and at ease. This includes proper lighting so that people can see in all directions and feel free and safe to move around, good walk paths so that people can move around without impediment and proper seating for leisure which gives people a place to sit, relax and enjoy each other’s company. The design has to be inclusive for all. It can be used by children because there is place for them to play and infrastructure for the same.

Ensuring ADA-compliant paths with smooth, non-slip surfaces and proper width allows everyone, from wheelchair users to parents with strollers, to navigate the park comfortably. Clear signage and seating areas further enhance accessibility. Parks should feel open and secure, minimizing hidden corners where visibility is obstructed. Maintaining clear sightlines by trimming overgrown vegetation and strategically placing lighting can deter unwanted activity and enhance safety, especially at night. Well-lit pathways and gathering areas make parks feel more inviting. Using large, immovable rocks and sturdy park amenities prevents misuse and reduces hazards like tripping or vandalism. Thoughtfully placed benches, fences, and natural barriers can guide foot traffic and protect delicate plant life. By prioritizing accessibility, smart plant choices, visibility, and safe landscaping, we can create public spaces that are safe, enjoyable, and inclusive for all ages. Investing in these upgrades not only improves user experience but also fosters a sense of community, encouraging more people to visit and appreciate their local parks.
