Dogs can get killed at the dog park. The two major threats at the dog park are accidental injury and predatory drift. Accidental injury is obvious and occurs when a tiny dog is playing with a larger dog the tiny dog accidentally gets twisted, stepped on or crushed. Sometimes they are even killed. Predatory drift happens when a dog, or more often, a group of dogs, suddenly no longer see the tiny dog as a dog playmate, but instead see them as a prey item. If this happens and the tiny dog is not rescued and removed immediately, disaster can occur. If the large dog is able to grab the small dog, they might kill it. A negative experience at a young age can permanently damage your pup. Like with the small dogs, a puppy screaming in fear can trigger a predatory response from other dogs. One of the major pitfalls of any dog park is that anyone can bring any dog.

Dogs can be a nuisance to other park visitors and can cause damage to the park itself. Dogs have been known to chase after wildlife, and even if they are well mannered, and leashed, the presence of a dog can impact the behavior of other animals nearby. Dogs leave scent behind that can be detected for long time periods that may affect the behavior of wildlife. Dogs may dig up plants, trample over fragile vegetation, or chase after small animals. They may also bring harmful bacteria into the park, which can spread disease and contaminate water sources. Dogs are often loud, energetic, and unpredictable, which makes them a source of stress for many people. Search And Rescue teams have to rescue lost, injured, or sick dogs every single year. This adds expense and risk to SAR teams, and many national parks don’t want to add this level of risk or cost.

Dogs on children's playgrounds represent a major health and injury hazard: Toxocariasis - a rare infection caused by roundworm parasites, most commonly found in cats, dogs and foxes faeces. Children and young adults are usually affected due to contact with contaminated soil or sand within play areas by swallowing the infected egg. There is evidence that dogs can also carry E.coli and hepatitis in their faeces. There are over 7,000 admissions to hospital for dog bites and attacks annually in the U.K. and under 10's were most likely to be admitted. Removing dog faeces from the playground is an unpleasant task for maintenance and cleansing staff. Some loose-fill surfaces (sand/bark) in areas will also attract cats which can also spread diseases in their droppings. In some areas fox and sheep droppings may be a problem.

Dogs have been banned at 72 park sites in a Nottinghamshire district after some owners failed to clean up after their pets. Councillor Nora Armstrong said: These powers, which also help us to control where dogs are taken and how many, should help us make sure more people enjoy a cleaner, greener and safer environment. West Somerset Council has also banned dogs from 20 places including parks, play areas and sea fronts. And many other areas of the UK have banned dogs from certain areas at certain times.
