Cadets and midshipmen get briefed on all of this. Most USAFA grads start off as “O-1 under 2,” meaning the the first rung of their pay ladder, pegged at under 2 years of service. You can see every 2 years there is a pay bump linked to time in service, and at promotion points to the next rank/paygrade, another pay bump. There is basic pay. This is salary tied to paygrade and years of service across all armed services. The link below is the DFAS Officer pay tables.

As a first-year cadet, your monthly stipend is going to feel considerably lighter than you might expect, as deductions eat into your paycheck. It’s not uncommon to walk away with only a few hundred dollars to your name. The silver lining is that most required supplies are one-time fees, which means the financial pain is only temporary. As you progress through your four years at the Academy, your pay will gradually approach the $1,200 mark. Deductions aren’t the only hidden fine print for free tuition and a helpful stipend. In exchange for a full-ride, cadets are required to serve in the U.S. Air or Space Force for a minimum of five years after graduation.
