Walking is one of the most popular forms of exercise for your dog, but it’s not the only way to keep a dog fit, happy and healthy. There are many excellent alternatives to walking, which can help give your dog all of the mental and physical exercise they need. Exercising older dogs If you have an elderly dog, allowing them to potter round the garden may be enough exercise. Garden exercise for active dogs Search games – find the hidden gem! Lunges are a great exercise for dogs as they excitedly meander between your strides. Encouraging your dog to weave in and out, try to complete four sets of eight lunging reps per leg. Squats are a great, hands-on activity that helps you to continue bonding with your dog, as the pair of you squat three sets of ten reps together. Burpees are great for getting the heart racing – but also the perfect opportunity to encourage doggy involvement. Wall sits simply involve resting your back against a flat surface, with your knees bent and thighs as parallel to the floor as possible, with your dog on your lap for a little extra weight or standing before you with their encouraging paws resting on your knees. Push-ups benefit from enjoyable doggy involvement, completing three sets of eight push-ups, reach out to give your dog a high five after each complete action, or let them sit on your back for a little extra resistance. Plank can be made a little more fun by alternating your holding arm and giving your dog regular high fives. Light or low impact activity includes leisurely walking, swimming, a quick game of fetch, and don’t forget mentally stimulating activities like teaching your dog tricks or interactive toys. If you can't get outdoors, a game of indoor fetch, some nose work or working on basic training skills will work. Moderate activity Medium intensity exercises include brisk walks, hiking on flat terrain, backyard training games, an intense game of fetch or tug of war. If you can’t get outside, running up and down the stairs or hide and seek are also great options. Intense exercise includes a fast-paced game of fetch or monkey in the middle, running off lead, joining you on a bike ride, hiking hilly terrain, playing with other dogs, agility training, mushing, or skijoring. When exercising your dog, make sure you have plenty of water and watch their behavior, panting, sitting, and laying down are all signs you have tired them out! If you haven’t exercised your dog in a while, start slow. Always consult with your vet before beginning an exercise routine.

Every dog's daily schedule should include walking to ensure their physical and mental well-being. Typically, dogs require a minimum of one to two walks per day, unless advised otherwise by your veterinarian. It’s best to avoid chasing, jumping, and skidding. Walking and gentle running is fine. Exercise is an important factor in dog behaviour, as dogs with excess energy often become frustrated, stressed and find it difficult to cope. Having a good exercise routine may help to improve any unwanted behaviours, but is unlikely to fix the problem completely. Walks give your dog a chance to sniff new smells, explore new places and meet new people and dogs – all of which are really important for their mental wellbeing and confidence.
