#1 Dindim the Pengquin The first time I ever saw a penguin in the wild was in at Boulders Beach in South Africa, of all places. According to Bored Panda 71-year-old retired bricklayer and part time fisherman Joao Pereira de Souza found Dindim, a South American Magellanic penguin, covered in oil and close to death. When De Souza nursed him back to health, however, he found that Dindim didn’t want to leave; when he finally did, De Souza was surprised to see him return the next year, and the years following. #2 A Lion Called Christian Imagine raising a lion in downtown London, having to re-introduce him to the wilds of Africa after he grows too big to control, and then visiting him (and his pride) several years later. #3 Hachi I still haven’t read the book, because I’m not sure if I can handle it after seeing the movie. #4 Land of the Strays If you ever wanted to walk among and with over 900 rescued dogs, then make your way down to Costa Rica to a placed called Territorio de Zaguates, or “Land of the Strays.” #5 Milanese Dog Rides Bus to Park Cacao, a mixed breed dog in Milan, Italy, does something that you probably don’t. Since around 2008, Cacao leaves his master’s home every morning and waits for Bus 54. #6 The most badass person alive? A couple years ago a video surfaced of this (Russian) man saving a dog, by crushing through the top layer of ice on a frozen lake…with his bare hands. #7 His best friend is a…crocodile I honestly thought this was a joke when someone sent me the video link, but after watching Chito (the man) swim and train Pocho (the crocodile), I am absolutely blown away. After rescuing Pocho from a bullet wound that brought him to the bring of death, Chito nursed him back to health and trained him how to survive and live alongside him.

A pair of pygmy slow lorises—the world’s only primate that can produce venom—were born this year to mother Naga and father Pabu at the Zoo’s Small Mammal House. Their births increase the chances of survival for this endangered species, whose numbers are in decline due to wildlife trafficking and habitat loss. Did you know the Bird House is the only place in the world to successfully hatch the common yellowthroat? Including a pair of these cute little warblers, 27 chicks from 9 different species hatched at the Zoo this year. Soon after birth, Edgar’s mother rejected him. Without the care and attention of his mother, Curator of Primates Becky Malinsky knew tiny Edgar would need help to stand a chance at survival. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is once again home to giant pandas. After issuing a heartfelt farewell to Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Qiao Qi Ji last fall, keepers welcomed a new pair of pandas to the nation’s capital from China Oct. 15. The 3-year-old pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, are currently acclimating to their habitat and will make their public debut Jan. 24, 2025.
