Some dogs simply enjoy the cold weather! While any dog might prefer the cold, this is especially true for cold-weather dog breeds with a double coat. Sometimes, it’s not that your dog wants to get out into the cold, it’s just that they want to get out. They’re not cold, and they’ll enjoy the time outside in their natural element! While it’s unpleasant to think about, sometimes your dog starts to like the colder weather a bit more because of an underlying health condition. These health conditions can make your dog constantly feel hot, and the cold weather can feel good if this is the case. This is likely the issue if it’s a sudden change with your pup. If they go from hating the cold one day to loving it the next, you’ll want to take notice and see if there’s something a bit more serious going on.

As dogs get older, they can be happy doing much more sedentary activities. Being out in the great outdoors getting the smells, the sun, and the air on her are allowing her to experience things and to enjoy them. Some if they are becoming less visual due to age related issues can do similar things too. Some with arthritis causing them to have more difficulty getting around will do this too. If she's still eating well, comfortable, pretty mobile and otherwise seeming to be doing ok for her age - then this behavior of sitting outside and smelling the air is her new most entertaining thing. When some of the other senses seem to be not as sharp, their sense of smell gets heightened and she may be more focused on this. This new activity is one that is giving her peace and entertainment.

Signs of a distressed dog included barking, howling or whining excessively, as well as panting, hiding and/or showing aggression.
