Unspayed females don't belong in dog parks when they're in heat. Doing so risks pregnancy, and a female dog in heat can distract other dogs and cause fights. It's just not worth the risk. If you want to be able to take your dog to the park whenever you please, we strongly recommend having her spayed as soon as possible.

If your female dog is on heat and you're not prepared to stay around the edges of the dog park or put her in doggy diapers, don't bring her and bitch at other people because their dogs are showing interest. Her owner on the other hand seems to hate this and always calls her away. She approached mine and my friend's dogs today and my friend quietly told me that she was on heat and that she'd seen her the day before and had the owner bitch at her for allowing her mutt and Springer to sniff her. Wary of this, she called both of her dogs away before they began to sniff her butt and area and mine didn't seem interested until the Vizsla went to run off and they caught a whiff. The owner grabbed her by the collar and I called my two away and reassured her that they'd been fixed. The owner snottily said that she comes out at this time so that her dog can be uninterrupted by male dogs.

When your dog is in heat, it can be a very stressful time. To help destress her, exercise is helpful. There is a misconception that female dogs in heat shouldn’t get any exercise, but she still needs walks. Avoid strenuous physical activities, a brief walk around the block will already do great wonders. The most important rule when walking your dog in heat is to always use a leash. You must always keep her on a leash, no matter where you take her. Whether it’s down the road, out in the country, or in a park, staying on a leash is important for ensuring her safety. Whilst you walk your dog, she will be giving off pheromones that advertise the fact that she is in season. This will attract any unneutered dog in the surrounding vicinity. Avoid male dogs Whilst you walk your dog, stay clear of other dogs to help to prevent disaster, especially males who are off-leash in public.

A dog in heat may cause aggression among male dogs and could result in fighting. Avoid off-leash walks or taking trips to the dog park. It’s best to avoid this altogether by skipping trips to the dog park or off-leash activities until your dog no longer shows signs of being in heat. Even if your yard is fenced in, the scent of a dog in heat can cause male dogs to go the extra mile to try and mate with her. Dogs may even find a way into a fenced yard, so keeping your pet indoors is the best precaution. Keep your dog indoors. If your dog isn’t able to do her normal outside activities, she will likely get frustrated.

If you have not had her spayed you may be wondering if it is safe to take her out for a walk when she is in season and there are other dogs around. You Must Keep Her on the Lead With this said, you must keep your dog on the lead if you take her out for a walk, no matter where you take her. Whether it's along the road, in a park or out in the country, when she is in season she will have to stay on her lead at all times. The reason being that other dogs in the vicinity will know she is on heat and will automatically head her way.
Avoid Very Busy Parks It's best to avoid very busy parks where lots of owners regularly take their dogs so they can run off their leads. You may have your dog on a lead, but if other dogs are off theirs, it could be a recipe for disaster. All the loose dogs will be attracted by her scent, including other females and neutered dogs because they all love a new and “exciting” smells which they will all want to investigate!
The best way to prevent this from happening is to put your dog in the car and take them to a park that's not too close to where you live. In short, you effectively break the trail you dog leaves behind her when she's in season and out on a walk. Consider Using Specific Deodorant Sprays for Bitches in Season If you cannot avoid taking your dog to a park where there are lots of other dogs, you can always use a specific deodorant spray that's formulated to disguise the fact a bitch is in season.

Never bring an intact female (not spayed) in heat to the dog park. There could be an intact male (not neutered) dog that cannot control himself. You are probably not planning to breed your female to some random dog. Worse, if more than one intact male is in the park, they could start a fight over your female in heat. Don't risk it.
