While vaccine reactions are rare, they do sometimes occur. The benefits of vaccinating far outweigh the risks of any side effect from a vaccine that is easily treatable and much less severe than the disease itself. Any medical procedure – including vaccines – can have potential adverse effects. Though it can be distressing to watch your beloved pup have an adverse reaction to a vaccine, remember that most of these reactions are rare, mild and short-lived. Minor reactions usually resolve in the first 24 hours and may include urticaria – skin reactions such as redness, itchiness or hives, an increase in body temperature, pain at the injection site, reduced appetite, mild lethargy, sneezing and cold-like symptoms. Reactions can include a runny nose, sneezing and coughing, most dogs will recover from these symptoms within a couple of days. Serious reactions to vaccinations though most reactions your pet may have to vaccinations will be short-lived and mild, more severe reactions requiring immediate attention may occur in a few rare cases. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that may include hives, breathing difficulties, vomiting, facial swelling, itchiness and diarrhoea.

Most puppies do very well after their vaccinations and show little to no sign that anything happened at all. It is normal to see the following for a day or two after vaccines are given: Discomfort at the site of injection Lethargy or reluctance to play Mild fever Mild warmth or swelling at the site of injection Reduced appetite Sneezing after an intranasal vaccine. If any of these symptoms persist for more than 72 hours, please let us know. More severe reactions are rare but do occur. More severe reactions that are not normal include: Facial swelling Difficulty breathing Hives Vomiting Diarrhea Collapse. Lumps can sometimes be felt after a vaccine is given.

After receiving a dose of the vaccine, it's not uncommon for your pup to display mild symptoms as the dog's immune system mounts an immune response. Some of the most common side effects dogs experience include: Lethargy: A common reaction, many puppies might feel a bit sluggish or tired for a couple of days after the vaccine. Loss of Appetite: Your puppy might not be as hungry as usual, but this typically resolves within a day or two. Mild Fever: A slight increase in temperature can be a sign that the puppy's body is building protection. Runny Nose: Particularly if your puppy has had intranasal vaccines, a runny nose is one of the mild side effects. Difficulty Breathing or Severe Allergic Reaction: If you notice your puppy struggling to breathe after the vaccine, it could be a rare but serious vaccine reaction. Severe Lethargy or Loss of Appetite: If these symptoms persist for more than a couple of days, it’s worth consulting your veterinarian. Always remember that while adverse reactions can occur, they are rare cases.

As with any other medicine, it’s possible for pets to have an allergic reaction to a vaccine, but it’s important to remember that this is extremely rare. Vets vaccinate millions of pets each year and only a tiny number experience side effects, most of which are mild and pass within a few days. There are some common vaccine side effects that often only last a few days and disappear without treatment: Low energy (lethargy) Eating less Sleeping more Fever (high temperature) Mild swelling around the vaccine site that disappears in two - six weeks. Less common side effects include: Twitching Itchy skin Vomiting Diarrhoea Limping. In very rare circumstances, a vaccine can cause a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis). Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction include: Swelling anywhere on the body Breathing difficulty Cold ears, legs and feet Seizures A pounding heart beat Collapse. If your pet is suffering mild side effects after a vaccination, monitor them and call your vet for advice if you are concerned, if their condition gets worse, or if their symptoms last for more than 24-48 hours. Contact your vet immediately if your pet is having an allergic reaction.
