Although it may be tempting to try removing a tick without the proper equipment, it is always best to take you time to find something that will remove it properly, even if this means delaying by an hour or two. Ask friends and family if they have a tick twisting tool, make a homemade tick remover, or as a last resort, you can use ordinary tweezers – but be very careful to hold the tick gently, and as close to the skin as possible. If you don’t have a tick remover, you can make a simple tool at home using some rigid card or an old credit card and some scissors. Simply cut a narrow triangular wedge out of one corner of the card and push it underneath the tick, as close to your pet’s skin as possible. Gently push the tick in one direction, until your feel it loosen, at which point you can remove it.

Tweezers with fine tips are recommended when removing ticks. They should be applied as close as possible to the animal's skin without applying pressure to the skin or the tick. The closer the tip of the tweezer is to the skin, the greater the chance of being able to pull out the entire tick. The parasite must be fixed with an even pressure but do not squeeze the tick as this may cause it to release its infectious saliva into the dog or cat. It is better to pull the tick straight and upwards with a slow, even movement. A look at the area will show whether it has been completely removed. If part of the tick is still visible in the animal's skin, a veterinarian should be consulted to remove the rest immediately. The bite site should be treated with a disinfectant recommended by the veterinarian for such purposes.

If no tools are available, rather than delay use a fine thread, something like cotton or dental floss. Tie a single loop of thread around the tick’s mouthparts, as close to the skin as possible, then pull upwards and outwards without twisting. With the pointed tweezers grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, without squeezing the tick’s body, pull the tick out without twisting. Do not use eyebrow tweezers – that may squash more tick saliva into you. Do not try to suffocate the tick with Vaseline – just take it off. It doesn’t matter if you leave a small bit of tick in your skin – your body will get rid of it. Do clean the site of the tick bite with soap and water afterwards.

To remove a tick from a dog without a tick remover, clean and disinfect the area with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol or liquid dish soap, which can cause the tick to back out. If you don’t have peroxide, antibacterial soap, rubbing alcohol, Bactine or Neosporin can be used to disinfect the area. Use tweezers to pinch a tiny amount of the pet's skin where the tick is embedded and give the tweezers a solid pinch to remove the entire tick. Make sure the tweezers are clean and rub them with alcohol if they’re not to prevent infection. If you don’t have tweezers, dental floss can be used by tying some thread around the mouthpart area of the tick and pulling up and outwards slowly. Pull slowly, so you don’t break the tick off but rather pull it off completely. When doing so, avoid using fingers as they can squeeze the abdomen of the tick, causing it to regurgitate stomach contents and possibly disease. Smothering a tick with petroleum jelly or nail polish remover may also cause this same reaction.
