For many years rice has made up part of a canine guardian's go-to diet for dogs with sickness or digestive imbalances. The fact is, rice, especially white rice, holds virtually zero nutrient content. Even brown or wild varieties, with their useful B vitamins, would be outplayed by any meat in the dog’s diet in terms of the B vitamins and possible magnesium it could offer pound for pound. Rice, and more so brown rice, also contain an anti-nutrient known as Phytic Acid. To provide a balanced fresh and raw food diet with the needed volume of nutrients, rice needs to be avoided. All grains, and especially refined grains such as white rice, are quickly turned to sugars in the dog’s digestive system. Rather than supporting sickness, rice contributes to the sickness occurring again. While we feel fresh cooked chicken is better for a poorly dog, we all know deep down that fresh, wholefood is more nutritious and healing.

Rice is a grain, and grains are inherently inflammatory for many dogs.
They’re also difficult for dogs to digest — the body has to work hard to break them down.
Rice is also pure carbohydrate, and dogs have very little nutritional requirement for carbs in their diet.
White rice, in particular, has a high glycemic index, meaning it causes a rapid spike in blood sugar levels.
For a dog already dealing with gastrointestinal inflammation, this starchy, fast-burning food is far from ideal.
Rice may be “bland,” but it isn’t species-appropriate for carnivores like dogs.
It’s unnecessary, potentially inflammatory, and can even contain contaminants like arsenic.
Feeding rice to a dog with GI upset may soothe symptoms temporarily but doesn’t address the underlying problem — and in many cases, it doesn’t fully work.
