Cuts are always best treated as soon as possible once discovered. The trouble is that the thick nature of skin on dogs’ pads means that they do not always heal in a straightforward manner, combine this with the fact that pads are under constant pressure when a dog weight bares on them, and these wounds can take a tedious amount of time to heal. If we suture a cut pad, we will often put a bandage on to protect it while it heals. Any dog with a cut pad will be facing a minimum of ten days rest for it to fully heal.

A torn foot pad does not hold stitches well, so cuts and punctures take longer to heal. Walking on the injured foot often opens the wound and further delays healing. If the debris is lodged deeply, leave it alone. Use mild antibacterial soap to disinfect the wound. Control bleeding by applying pressure to the wound with a clean towel. Apply a bandage to contain the wound. The gauze padding will also decrease the pain of walking on the foot. If the wound continues to bleed or gapes open after three days, visit your veterinarian who can provide antibiotics and pain medication to promote faster healing.

He didn't show any signs of pain while we were out but started limping when we got home. Hes fine with me touching and checking it and does seem to be putting weight on it sometimes. Should i wait until it is completely healed before taking him for a walk. Or is it ok to walk him when he is putting weight on it properly. He seems ok with staying in at the moment. He runs and bounces constantly when out so I am afraid he may split it open again if I take him out too soon.

She was walking normally but when I got back to the car, I noticed that she was leaving smudges of blood on the ground behind her. She had an obvious cut on the front of her back right foot – 1cm wide, around 5mm deep. A cut pad needs to be bandaged to protect the wound. The big challenge with dogs is that they tend to remove dressings, and so they have to be attached as securely as possible. The cut pad will probably take about 10 days to heal fully. So the job is now done: it looks comfortable and secure. We need to keep it dry now, and will probably change it every 3 – 4 days if it stays on.
