A good diet can be life changing if your dog is suffering from arthritis or other joint problems. If your dog currently eats a commercial diet then it’s highly likely the food contains refined grains. Choose whole grains or sweet potatoes instead or other brightly colored fruits and vegetables as they provide important phytonutrients and antioxidants that help fight inflammation. Oily fish such as fresh salmon, sardines and mackerel, rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, are also great foods to add to your dog’s diet. Omega 3 is an anti-inflammatory and can increase joint mobility. Eggs and meat can aggravate inflammation but that doesn’t mean you cannot feed your dog these foods just choose leaner cuts.

Yams are high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients that help with arthritis. Cranberries are rich in vitamins, including vitamin A, B1, B2, and C. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to ease the symptoms of arthritis in dogs. Quinoa contains powerful antioxidants, which naturally helps with chronic inflammation. Kale is a great source of magnesium and antioxidants. Carrots are an antioxidant-rich vegetable and contain vitamin A, which promotes healthy nerve function. Red delicious apples are high in antioxidants and fiber. Look for dog foods that list yams or sweet potatoes as a top ingredient, or boil one at home and serve fresh -- just be sure to leave out any of the seasoning and oils that you’d use to cook one for yourself.
