Solipat works by hardening the pads of your dog's paws to make them stronger.
Solipat is used externally and must be applied over the entire surface of the pads.
To prepare your dog for extreme activity: apply Solipat once daily for 10-15 days.
While your dog is active: apply Solipat 2 to 3 times weekly.
If your dog has damaged its pads: apply Solipat 1 to 2 times weekly.
There are 3 different ways to apply Solipat: By pressing the opening of the Solipat bottle right onto your dog's pads.
By soaking a cloth or gauze pad in Solipat and then dabbing it onto your dog's pads.
By pouring Solipat into a container and then dipping your dog's paws into the container.

I put mushers secret on their pads which seems to help a bit.
I use mushers also, she had cracked paws and it really helped.
Not sure it will toughen them but it definitely helped.
My dogs spend most of their home time in a large area around the house which is brick paved.
The result is that with their dashing around the property on the paving has hardened their pads.
They very rarely have issues in season with pads.
Obviously it is impossible to guards against sharp objects cutting pads no matter how tempered they are.
Never used ointments as a preventative measure.
