A healthy dog´s ear does not need assistance in keeping clean. The ear canal is a tubular extension of the skin with some extra features. Skin cells mature and slough off approximately every three weeks. Skin cells travel outwards and carry wax, microorganisms that normally reside on the skin surface and any foreign material that needs to be removed, towards the ear opening like a conveyor belt. This allows the dog to clean its own ears. Healthy dog ears contain lots of yeast and bacteria, this is normal, but if the environment is not balanced, these microorganisms can overgrow and cause further disturbances to the ear canal. There is no need to clean a healthy dog's ear, as it cleans itself. In general, dogs with heavy, tight-closing earflaps or narrow ear canals, are more prone to ear disease.

A routine ear cleaning is recommended if the ears get wet, such as after swimming or bathing. For a dog with healthy, normal ears, a routine ear clean is only needed if dirt or debris is noted, as overcleaning the ears can also lead to irritation of the ears. Dogs with a history of allergies, recurrent ear infections, or floppy ears may need their ears cleaned more frequently. Regularly check your dog’s ears for signs of infection, which may include: Redness, Itching one or both ears, Headshaking, Discharge or increased wax in the ear, Odor, Discomfort when touching the ear.

A dog’s ear canal forms an “L” shape. It’s very long, with a 90-degree curve that is difficult to reach. You should also know what a healthy dog's ear looks like—light pink with no apparent dirt or inflammation. The American Kennel Club provides insight on how to tell when your dog’s ears are ready for a cleaning. Hydrogen peroxide is also not acceptable, as it can irritate healthy skin cells and sensitive tissue. Stick to gentle ear cleansers designed for pets, along with cotton balls or gauze. To clean your dog’s ears once they’re relaxed: Hold their ear open while on their side and fill the exposed ear canal with cleanser. Use gauze or tear a cotton ball in half and wrap the cotton around your finger, and gently wipe away any debris as far into the ear canal as you can comfortably reach—but no deeper than one knuckle. If you see excessive amounts of wax, smell a foul odor, blood is present, or your dog appears to be in pain from the cleaning, schedule a veterinarian visit.

The ear wax should be a yellow color. Dogs have an ear-cleaning mechanism that will naturally keep their ears clean. Your dog’s ears should be cleaned with a solution specifically developed for this purpose. To keep your dog’s ears healthy, you should check them at least once weekly. Some signs to look for include: Odor Discharge Blood Swelling of the ear or narrowing of the ear canals Ulcers in the ear canal Redness to the ear and/or canal Scratching of the ears Excessive shaking of the head Tilting of the head Turning in circles Acting off-balance.
