The ear mite life cycle takes 21 days. To ensure all mite eggs have been eliminated treatment needs to continue for a minimum of 3 weeks. If using a single use product such as Revolution one dose is often enough to get rid of an ear mite infection but it will still take up to three or four weeks for the infection to completely clear up. There are over-the-counter topical medications available at most pet supply stores, however, these do not kill mite eggs and therefore treatment can last for up to 30 days.

Ear mites are a fairly common parasite that can affect dogs and cats. They live on the skin of the ear canal and feed off ear wax and skin oils. Adult ear mites live for around two months, but they can multiply quickly. Their eggs take just four days to hatch and a further three weeks to develop into an adult mite, ready to breed again. Ear drops are also available. Ear mite eggs take 21 days to develop into adult mites, which means that ear drops are often needed for around three weeks.

Dogs typically start feeling better a day or two after starting treatment. Ear mites can take up to 30 days to be fully eliminated from the dog’s ear canals. Most commonly, a single course of treatment is all that is needed if the ear cleanings and medications were given continuously and as prescribed by the veterinarian. Following treatment, pet parents should bring their dog back to the veterinarian for a repeat ear cytology to check that the ear mites are gone. If the dog is still having symptoms or the ear cytology shows ear mites or infection, another round of treatment may be prescribed. A single treatment is typically effective at getting rid of the ear mites.
