During the winter, dogs typically aren’t as dirty, but are more prone to dry skin which can be itchy and irritating, so a moisturizing shampoo is necessary. The level of bathing will depend on the amount of dirt and grime on your pooch. Dog odor tends to be more obvious in the summer versus the winter months. Bathing too frequently can lead to dry coats and skin problems, while not enough bathing can lead to health problems and a stinky pup. The happy medium may range from bathing your dog once a week to only a few times a year. Bathing and grooming are two related but different things. All dogs need regular grooming.

Some dogs are more vulnerable to cold than others, especially those breeds that are smaller or have little hair, and who need extra help in winter in the form of coats. The fur and skin of dogs follow a natural cycle that prepares them to face low temperatures, secreting natural oils that help them with that protection. Therefore, some experts consider that bathing your dog in winter is a serious mistake. The reason is that it interferes with that natural protection by eliminating it and make the dog more vulnerable against to cold. If you feel your dog needs to be bathed in winter because of its body odor or because he’s become dirty during a walk, pay attention to the following tips.

Often our pets require less bathing in winter, but if your dog likes to play in muddy puddles no matter the weather or temperature here are a few bathing tips to follow this winter. Where possible bath your dog indoors using warm, not hot, water. If you must bath your dog outdoors, try to bath during the warmest part of the day. Thoroughly dry your dog with towels after the bath to remove as much water as possible. Never use a hair dryer on the HOT setting to dry your pet. Using a hair dryer will dry out your pet’s skin, but if it must be used, only use the cool settings to avoid burns and damage to your pet’s skin. We always recommend using a quality leave-on conditioner after bathing to restore moisture loss. This is particularly important during winter months when pets are more susceptible to dry skin.
