To clean wax out of dog ears at home, you will need a good-quality ear cleaning solution, some cotton balls or gauze, and some treats to reward your dog. Do not use cotton-tipped applicators (Q-tips), due to the risk of puncturing the ear drum or causing trauma to the ear canal. Hold the ear cleaning solution in your dominant hand. With your other hand, gently but firmly grasp the tip of the ear and pull the ear flap straight up to expose the ear and straighten the ear canal. Squeeze some ear cleaning solution into your dog’s ear, using enough cleaner to completely fill the ear canal. Continue to hold the ear flap straight up with one hand and gently massage the base of the ear below the ear opening for about 30 seconds with the other hand. While still holding up the ear flap, wipe away debris from the inner part of the ear flap and the upper ear canal using a cotton ball or gauze. Allow your dog to shake his head, and then remove the loosened debris and cleaning solution from the outer opening of the ear canal using a cotton ball or gauze. Remove any debris and remaining cleaning solution from inside the ear canal with a cotton ball or gauze – only go into the ear canal as far as your finger will reach. Never use a cotton-tipped applicator to remove the solution from the ear canal, as this can damage the ear canal and/or ear drum or push debris further into the ear canal.

Straighten the ear canal by gently pulling the tip of the ear flap upwards. Drip a dog ear cleaning solution into your dog’s ear canal using a plastic or glass dropper. Gently massage the base of your dog’s ear with your thumb and forefinger for 30 seconds. Tip your dog’s head to the side and let the dog ear cleaning solution drip out onto a towel. Being careful not to insert anything deeper into the ear canal than ½ inch, remove any excess wax or particles with a soft cloth, tissue or specially made dog ear cleaning pad. Ventilate your dog’s ears by folding back their ears and allowing them to dry out for about five minutes. Wrap things up by administering a dog ear drying powder. If you can see a build-up of oil or wax inside the ear, try using an Almond Oil dog ear cleaning solution: Pour a small amount of almond oil into a cup or glass Immerse cup or glass in a sink or bowl full of hot water Straighten ear canal by gently lifting the tip of the ear flap upwards Slowly drop about ½ teaspoon of almond oil into your dog’s ear canal using a plastic or glass dropper Allow the oil to run down ear canal for 5 seconds Gently massage the ear canal with your thumb and forefinger as mentioned above. Use a soft cloth, tissue or special ear cleaning pad to remove the excess oil.

You will need a gentle ear cleaning solution and gauze squares or cotton balls. We do not recommend the use of cotton swabs, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean your dog’s ears. Step 1 Pour a generous amount of the recommended cleaning solution directly into the ear canal. Massage the base of the ear canal until you hear a squishing noise to ensure enough solution has been added. You should allow your dog to shake their head, but use caution not to get fluid in your eyes. This allows your dog to push the deep debris out or forward to where you are able to wipe it away. Step 2Using the cotton balls or gauze squares, absorb the excess solution and debris from the ear. You may wipe as deep as you can reach, with your finger, into the ear canal. Step 3 Repeat the previous steps until the cotton balls or gauze squares come out clean.

To clean your dog's ears, use a general-purpose ear cleanser that does not contain any alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or other harsh chemicals. Wait until your dog is calm and relaxed before attempting to clean their ears. Then, turn them on their side and hold their ear open. Fill their ear with the gentle cleansing liquid until you can see the fluid, then pinch the ear shut to keep the cleansing liquid in. Massage the base of the ear gently for about 30 seconds, listening for the sound of the fluid swishing around. Thereafter, allow your dog to shake their head to loosen the debris. Use a cotton ball or gauze to remove the debris from their ear, not going deeper into the canal than one knuckle. Be sure to wipe all the liquid from your dogs face if any fluid ended up there after your dog's shake. Hold their ear open while on their side and fill the exposed ear canal with cleanser, fill their ear until you see the fluid, then gently pinch the ear closed to contain it. Gently massage the base of the ear for at least 30 seconds, release your pinch on the ear canal and allow your dog to shake.

To clean wax out of dog ears at home, start by gently massaging your dog's ears to check their condition. If you notice that your dog is sensitive about having their ears touched, it’s time to take a closer look and likely time to clean them. When you are deciding on a time to clean your dog's ears, make sure to choose a time when they are calm, relaxed, and have expended most of their energy through play. Place a cotton ball or piece of gauze in the outer ear canal, just at the entrance of the ear, so that it stays in place without you holding it there, but is easy for you to remove when the cleaning is over. Fill the ear canal with cleaning solution by placing the tip of the cleaning container on top of the gauze, right next to the opening of the ear canal, and allow the cleaning solution to saturate the cotton and flow into the ear canal. Massage the ear canal by applying gentle pressure in a circular motion to the area where your dog’s ears attach to their head, spending about 30 seconds doing this. Let your dog shake their head to remove fluid and leftover gunk, then wipe away any visible wax or debris with cotton balls or dog ear wipes. Treat your dog with high-value treats for being patient during this process.
