The most common reason why a treatment can fail is irregular application. Topical fipronil and S-methoprene applied to cats still kills more than 95% of fleas within 24 hours, 28 days after application. However, after this time the efficacy does begin to drop, allowing fleas to survive long enough to reproduce. Investigations into suspected cases of resistance to fipronil and S-methoprene in fact found the product was more than 98% effective on fleas taken from these dogs. It was therefore concluded that any reported product failures were likely due to other factors but not insecticidal resistance.
