Honey has been used as a wound dressing for many years in human and veterinary medicine. Scientific research has found several biological properties that fight infection and promote healing. The pH Honey has a low pH, in other words it is acidic, with the average being 3.9. An acidic environment also encourages the red blood cells in adjacent blood vessels to release oxygen creating an oxygen rich environment. The low pH of honey inhibits the action of proteases. Honey is a very concentrated solution, so water flows from swollen surrounding tissues to dilute it. This removes some of the fluid that accumulates in inflamed tissue. There is also strong evidence that honey stimulates the immune response, encouraging new skin growth and suppressing inflammation. The hygroscopic action of attracting water dries out necrotic or dead tissue resulting in easier removal so fresh skin can cross the defect.

Manuka honey is used predominantly to aid wound healing.
When applied to wounds, Manuka honey provides a moist wound environment and a protective barrier, preventing bacterial infection.
It also helps remove damaged and dead cells, which – if left behind – provide a medium for bacteria to grow on, perpetuate inflammation and delay wound healing.
Manuka honey has several advantages over topical antibiotics.
It acts locally on the wound, so there are no systemic side effects as there can be with antibiotics.
Manuka honey is a natural product that: protects wounds facilitates healing by maintaining the wound pH reduces odours associated with wounds removes dying and dead cells and tissues.
PAW Manuka Wound Gel can be applied directly to open wounds, cuts, burns and grazes.
Manuka honey can be applied directly onto the wound bed, or on to dressings that are applied to wounds.
PAW Manuka Wound Gel is a sterile, medical-grade wound dressing made from Manuka honey.

When honey is applied to a wound, it serves multiple functions.
Honey has a high sugar content, meaning that it has a high level of osmolarity.
This means that this high concentration will pull any exudate or pus from the wound bed.
This then results in water being pulled from the wound, supporting the healing process and reducing any swelling.
Additionally, removing water from wounds draws out the water from within bacteria, dehydrating and killing these organisms.
Honey has a low pH value and is very acidic, therefore, by introducing a product with a low pH, the bacterial growth is inhibited.
The antimicrobial properties of honey is highly desirable as this supports the movement of antimicrobial stewardship.
The use of honey on wounds may avoid the requirement of antibiotics by providing a more natural alternative, although sometimes the use of antibiotics is essential in heavily infected and contaminated wounds.
However, deeper, infected or complex wounds are likely to benefit from honey application.
This is supported by recent scientific research which has proven the biological properties of honey promote wound healing and fight infection.

Honey as an antiseptic agent isn’t a new thing, but has long been thought to be limited to only a certain type of honey, specifically manuka honey. A recent study from researchers at the University of Glasgow demonstrated that various types of honey have antimicrobial action and were effective in inhibiting growth of bacteria commonly found in equine leg wounds. Another interesting finding from the Glasgow study was that some of the honeys they tested were effective against the dreaded MRSA. When I’m dressing an uncomplicated wound — meaning one that is superficial, not large, doesn’t involve bone, joint, or soft tissue exposure — I’ll often reach for a jar of antibiotic ointment prior to wrapping the wound in protective gauze while we wait for scar tissue to repair the damage. Instead, what I do want to happen is to have an engaging dialogue with clients on the option of using medical-grade honey on a wound. Medical-grade has been sterilized to eliminate contaminating bacteria/fungi on a wound.

Manuka honey is commonly used as a natural wound dressing for dogs due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It can help prevent infections, reduce swelling, and speed up the healing process. It’s particularly useful for: Cuts, scrapes, and burns Hot spots Bug bites and allergic reactions. Helping to combat harmful bacteria and support the immune system, Manuka honey also has anti-inflammatory effects, making it ideal for soothing irritated skin, treating minor wounds, and relieving allergies. For topical application for wounds and skin conditions Clean the affected area with warm water Apply a thin layer of Manuka honey directly to the wound or irritation Cover with a bandage to prevent licking Reapply one to two times daily until healed. Manuka honey offers powerful health benefits for dogs, thanks to its high concentration of methylglyoxal (MGO)—the compound responsible for its strong antibacterial properties.
