If your dog licks at their pads or limps, they may have a foot pad that is torn, punctured, or burned. Walking on the injured foot often opens the wound and further delays healing. Use mild antibacterial soap to disinfect the wound. Apply a bandage to contain the wound. The gauze padding will also decrease the pain of walking on the foot. Daily bandage changes and close monitoring of the injury are important. Try to avoid foot injuries in your dog by surveying the area where your dog plays and walks. Avoid hot sidewalks in the summer and icy or salt-covered sidewalks or roads in the winter.

If your four-legged companion is crate trained, it is the best time to confine him there and make sure plenty of water is available. Make your dog's bed extra comfortable and do your best to keep him on it. Remember that each time you dog goes anywhere, he will push against the ground with his sore paw which will delay the entire natural healing process. Because dogs aren't aware of how much they move, you need to be proactive at preventing your dog from walking unnecessarily. Avoid Unnecessary Movements

I've bathed it in salt water and it is clean with no sign of infection. Hes fine with me touching and checking it and does seem to be putting weight on it sometimes. Should i wait until it is completely healed before taking him for a walk. He seems ok with staying in at the moment. He runs and bounces constantly when out so I am afraid he may split it open again if I take him out too soon.
