If no tools are available, rather than delay use a fine thread, something like cotton or dental floss. Tie a single loop of thread around the tick’s mouthparts, as close to the skin as possible, then pull upwards and outwards without twisting. With the pointed tweezers grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible; without squeezing the tick’s body, pull the tick out without twisting. It doesn’t matter if you leave a small bit of tick in your skin – your body will get rid of it. DO NOT squeeze the body of the tick, as this may push infected tick saliva into your body. DO NOT use your fingernails to remove a tick. Infection may enter via any breaks in your skin, e.g. close to the fingernail. DO NOT try to burn the tick off, apply petroleum jelly, nail polish or any other chemical. Any of these methods can cause discomfort to the tick, resulting in saliva release.

To remove a tick, make sure not you don't squeeze the tick's body or leave the head in. If you squeeze its body or leave the head in, this can push blood back into your pet, which will increase the chance of them getting a disease. To avoid squeezing the body or leaving the head in, you'll need to twist the tick off. Your vet will be able to show you the best way to remove a tick by twisting. If you're unsure how to remove a tick, please speak to your vet first. Don't try to burn them off or use lotion to suffocate them, as this won't prevent your pet from picking up a disease. If you're bitten, use the tick twisting tool to remove the tick.
