Invite friends to your home. Children, adults, men, women, the UPS driver, the gardeners—have your pups see and experience these people in and around your home. Take your pup to a friend’s house. Just going into a new environment will offer your puppy lots of new experiences. Introduce your pup to healthy, vaccinated, and puppy friendly dogs. Take your pup on a walk in a stroller, wagon, or sling. Just don’t allow him to walk place that there might be other animal’s urine or feces. Take a large blanket and an exercise pen to the park. Let your pup watch the world go by on the safety of the blanket. Consider taking a puppy class. A well run puppy class takes precautions to help protect against diseases and will help you socialize your pups to things outside of your home while your pup is also getting some foundation training.

The American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior recommends starting puppy classes or other safe socialization one week after the first set of vaccines. Puppies should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class. We recommend avoiding taking your puppy to places like the dog park, letting them wander around the vet's office or shelter, taking them to busy places with tons of unknown dogs, or letting them meet unknown dogs on leash. Here are a few ways you can safely socialize your puppy: Puppy kindergarten classes with a certified, positive reinforcement trainer, meeting fully-vaccinated adult dogs that you know are great with puppies, having a picnic with friends, going to Home Depot or Lowes and putting your puppy in the cart. Having a picnic with friends can be done by bringing a blanket to sit on. Going to Home Depot or Lowes can be done by putting your puppy in the cart with a blanket or bed.
