A Healthy Puppy’s Body All dogs in a litter should have a similar body condition: not too plump or too bony. Puppy’s coats should be shiny and clean, without any irritate, red, or bare spots. These could indicate skin problems, such as mange or skin allergies. Puppy’s ears should be clean and free of order, discharge, and redness, and eyes should be bright and clear, also free of discharge. Some commons signs of parvo include lethargy in dogs, weakness, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and dehydration. Repeated episodes after or during a meal signal a veterinary visit. One loose or runny stool may not indicate a problem, but repeated bloody or watery stools lasting more than 24 hours could mean a problem. Bacteria, viruses, internal parasites, ingestion of a toxic substance, or overeating may be responsible. Taking a nap is OK—even a few throughout the day is acceptable, but a puppy shouldn’t be lethargic once they’re awake. Skipping one or two meals is acceptable, but missing more than that or eating only a few bites warrants a call to the veterinarian. Fever, loss of appetite, or a high white blood cell count may accompany pano. Look for firm, regular stools and clear urine. Bloody urine may indicate a urinary tract infection.

Any unexpected change in your dog’s food or water consumption could be an indication that something is wrong. This could be excessive water consumption, a prolonged lack of appetite, or unexplained weight changes. In more extreme cases your dog may show signs of an upset stomach. If your pet is vomiting frequently, an immediate trip to the vets is advised. Your dog’s face may be the first place where illness becomes visible, where sinus problems or dental issues could affect your pet’s ears, eyes, nose and mouth. Symptoms to look out for in this area would include discoloured or pale gums, excess drooling, bad breath or breathing difficulties. Problems like an unhealthy coat or joint stiffness can emerge over time, particularly as your dog gets older. Your dog is a member of your family, and as such you get to know their personality in depth. This should help you to be aware of any changes that could be signs of illness. These may include your dog avoiding you or hiding, an increase in tiredness, bouts of unprovoked aggression, or restlessness.

A dog that drinks more water than usual could be developing kidney disease or diabetes. You’ll be able to tell if your dog is drinking too much water if you have to refill the water bowl more than normal, or if they have an excessive amount of urine, need to go outside more often, or have accidents in the house. A dog’s coat should be thick, shiny, and soft. A coat that’s dull, rough, dry, or has bald patches could indicate that something isn’t right. Lethargy is a sign that something may be troubling your dog. A lethargic dog may be uninterested in playing, going for a walk, or participating in activities they usually enjoy. A healthy dog will have small, firm, moist stools. Dry, hard stools may be a sign of health maladies, dietary problems, or dehydration. Even in an overweight dog, sudden weight loss should prompt you to take them to the vet. Cloudy or red eyes, squinting, or excessive discharge from your dog’s eyes could indicate an infection or injury.
